Now that it is Tuesday its officially less then a week until I take my LSATs. I’ve been prepping for a long time now so I’m not too too worried, but its still kinda a big deal for me.

But since it is also less then a week till lsats, it is one full week until I can start tearing down my m50b25 to do a full rebuild into a stroker m50b30 (m54b30 internals) !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and seriously cannot wait to have some free time to go play with engine parts.

From one M54B30 owner to another, strongly consider avoiding law school entirely unless one (or, ideally, both) of these things is true: (a) you have known your entire life that you want to be a lawyer and it’s a dream that you absolutely must realize, or (b) someone else is paying for it and won’t need to be repaid.

I will be having at least some of it paid for, not quite sure how much yet.

Law has been a dream of mine for a long time, not just one of those things I felt I should do because there is a lot of money to be made. I had a great internship which pretty much solidified my desires as well. I could just stick with my econ degree and do finance or business analytics but frankly it bores the shit out of me. I’ve been taking law classes at school and had a good amount of experience doing a lot of different types of corporate law in the dow jones legal department and I don’t think I’d actually be satisfied doing anything else.

Not exactly set on corporate yet though, I’m also interested in mediation and family law so ill see where that takes me

Good luck, sounds like a reasonably informed decision! Bookmark this and report back after you’ve spent a few years dealing with the billable hour concept as the (more or less) sole indicator of your relative success as judged by your employers. Or, if you’re very lucky, report back that you’ve taken work in-house somewhere (like Dow Jones) and you have “normal person” vacation time that you can actually use. Either way, I’ll be happy to hear what you think =)

FYI - I’m 7+ years out of law school, still paying for it, and working at a small, specialized law firm in a major market. The quality of life, at least in theory, should be better than at a big firm...yet my current pressing concern is finding a job at a bank, financial firm, trust company or similar business that does not involve the actual practice of law (i.e., document preparation).

Haha will do, I hope that I can come back in a few years and report that I’m very happy with what I’m doing. But yeah I am hoping to be able to move in house to deal with more of the legal research and document prep stuff, it’s much more interesting to me then being a trial lawyer.

I'm not immediately jumping into law school though, after I take the lsats I plan on starting the search for a paralegal position in the Boston area because I want to get a little more experience with different types of law and save up some money before I go to law school and decide on a plan of study

Very wise indeed. Wish I would’ve taken the time myself to gain some perspective. I went straight through from undergrad. I’m mostly complaining because the day to day is a drag, and because I didn’t fully understand myself that massive student debt can land a crippling blow to career and life aspirations of a newly-minted professional, even if well paid, who can’t afford to take any risks. You don’t want to be stuck doing something you don’t like just because it’s secure. Ok - enough of my law ranting.

What’s the goal with this E36? You gonna track it? Our M54 car - a 2001 330i with 179k mi - is well on the way to racecar status. It goes to the cage builder next week. Interior is already out, race seats (OMP) have been acquired, brake upgrades done, etc. We’ve done a lot of work getting the engine to be reliable and replacing all the crap that goes bad over time - valve cover gasket, rubber vacuum/intake parts, complete cooling system replacement, etc. It’s been a lot of fun to wrench on it but I can’t wait until we’re done bc that means we’ll be racing! The end goal is that this car will be dual use for AER endurance races and Spec E46 sprints. Before buying the track-only car this past February I used to track my E90 M3, but I decided it was too nice to ruin it on track. Plus, I’m having a blast learning to drive a slow (to me) car fast!

Well right now it is doing the daily driver duty. I bought it in november and it had been sitting for 5 years. Basically did an entire powertrain and cooling refresh among other things so at this point I’m just tying up the few electrical gremlins it still has as well as doing some of the more preventative maintenance.

long term goal though is to build this engine and have the car ready to do autoX and track days next summer. It will still be my daily at that point but I will be living in boston with my girlfriend who also has a car, so it won’t be as completely necessary to have a daily. Where I live in Connecticut right now its at least a 20-30 minute drive to get to anything important so Ive only been able to to major stuff when I can borrow my brothers car.

I’m thinking the goal with this particular car though is to hopefully do this stroker, fuel injectors, 3.5 maf, new tune, and maybe manifold off the m54 if it offers better flow. Goal is around 240 horsepower give or take.

However, I am building the engine properly with new seals and gaskets and wear items all around, as well as arp studs and stuff so I have the option to supercharge it in the future. Nothing crazy but like 7-8psi is easily attainable on stock internals with a rebuilt engine, so should be more than enough to get me around 300 if it tickles my fancy

What a fun project!!! I can’t wait to see how it comes together. Make sure you keep us updated! Are you a BMW CCA member? If not, you really ought to be. You’re the exact sort of person we need lol. It’s under $50 a year and you get a cool magazine every month and access to lots of fun track days and other events hosted by your local chapter, which I assume is pretty active in New England. If you really want to get excited about BMW stuff before winter sets in you might consider doing a road trip down to NJ to hit up some of the events at Oktoberfest, which is a week-long BMW club shindig usually hosted somewhere far away like Colorado. This year, however, it’s in NJ and they’ve got quite the schedule lined up. Check it out, there are track days, road rallies, autox, all sorts of stuff: http://ofest.bmwcca.org/
